Description

I'm one of the comic artists for UC Davis' school newspaper "The California Aggie" for the summer of 2006. That's why the comic is copyrighted to the newspaper during this time frame and not to me. I hope you enjoy it. The newspaper website is [link]

Okay, I'm gone for the weekend, and deviantART changes its categories! I ended up putting this in the "manga (comics)" section. I consider (quantity)^2 a comic that is influenced by the design of anime. To me, it's a comic in the traditional sense, not manga. A comic, as North Americans know them, is something you read in the newspaper, aka the funnies or the funny pages. Manga is an import from Japan, more akin to what we call a "comic book," and is better compared to the productions of Marvel and DC and Dark Horse.

Needless to say that I'm grumpy about this category. What do the people not on the anime bandwagon think of this? Have I just missed the traditional North American/European comic section? If the guy who draws Doonesbury were on deviantART, where would his funnies go? Would they really go in the manga section? Or Stan Lee? Would a page of Spider-Man go in manga?

*grumble*

Also, I think that this comic published on this day, since there was no production of the Aggie on Labor Day. I don't think I would have done a specific comic about Sep. 11. I agree with Yarrum on this topic [link] It's hard to make the day special when we make it special every day anyhow. And being depressed/angry on this day is natural, and remembering those lost is good, but if we let it dominate our lives we're letting the terrorists win. That's why I went to Disneyland with my mother on Sep. 11 2006. That's the best "up yours" I can think of to a terrorist. Ha ha, you can't scare me; I'm going to enjoy this wonderful country you so despise. I'm going to spend a day at a theme park and wear what I want, say what I want, purchase what I want, and practice any other freedom I want. Sorry terrorists, I think I won.

The best freedom I practiced: riding any ride I want for however many times I pleased. Pirates of the Caribbean: 4 times. And yet, it was still not enough. :D

TL;DR amirite?

Another thing that distinguishes your comic from traditional manga is that you don't publish it in a 4-koma style like Azumanga Daioh.

Otherwise, I'm digging this series.
